The ultimate baby shower gift guide

Wondering what to gift a new mum or mum-to-be? Looking for an item that they will likely love and not just politely smile at? Here are some of our top baby shower gift ideas:

  • Silverette cups: These little gems are a game-changer when soothing (or helping to prevent) sore and cracked nipples. Made of 925 sterling silver, Silverette cups take advantage of the natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of silver, providing a healing environment for breastfeeding nipples. They are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and so easy to use!

  • Breastfeeding aprons: obviously we'd recommend My Little River :) ... designed to provide a little privacy for mums wanting to breastfeed in public, but not comfortable with being too exposed.

  • Sweet almond oil: This highly nourishing oil is light and easy to apply. It contains vitamins A, E, B1, B2, and B6 - perfect for delicate, sensitive skin and ideal for daily baby care (cradle cap, behind baby's ears, nappy rash, and body moisturiser).

  • Mombella mushroom soothing teether: This mushroom-shaped teether mimics baby's breastfeeding experience to encourage sucking. Made with soft silicone, it's designed to gently soothe sore gums.

  • Silicone pacifier clip: For babies that use a pacifier, this little clip is super handy to help avoid the countless 'dummy hunts' especially when baby is unsettled and needs to be soothed quickly.

  • Merino/organic cotton sleeping bags: Several brands produce these, but Woolbabe is a firm fave with their 3 season design that accommodates room temperatures between 18-28 degrees.

  • Tommee Tippee Groegg thermometer and nightlight: A soft light that assists with the night tasks like checking on baby, changing, and feeding. There is also the added benefit of a thermometer so you can keep an eye on the room temperature and adjust baby's comfort as necessary. Alternatively, a Himalayan salt lamp creates a lovely ambient light.

  • Rockit: A nifty device that can be attached to a pram to gently keep it rocking and help baby stay asleep.

  • Nature Baby Lambskin booties: These little booties come in a range of colours and are one of the few brands that actually stay on baby's feet. Ideal to help keep a winter newborn warm.

  • Portable Hushh white noise machine: There are various brands available, but these little devices are helpful sleeping aids for babies who like the replicated sounds from inside the womb. Simply affix to a cot, bassinet, or pram.

  • Viva La Vulva postpartum recovery products: Including perineal healing sprays and bath salts, this brand has a range of products to help support mums with their post-birth recovery.

  • Boon grass drying rack: For babies that will be bottle-fed, this product helps air and dry baby bottles and feeding accessories.

  • Muslin wraps: Mums are often gifted these in abundance, but they are very versatile (spit cloths, mats to lie on, light blankets, shelter). Cost effective options can be found at the likes of Kmart or Spotlight, or higher price point ones at the likes of Nature Baby.

The ultimate gift for a new mum and her family is food! Freezable meals in portioned sizes can be super helpful as they take away the stress and time requirements of meal prep and food shops.

And a top tip ... if you want to buy clothes:

  • ZIPS are a parents best friend, or 'preferably as few buttons as possible. As gorgeous as some of the button-up items are, they can be a nightmare when trying to dress a baby in a hurry (or in the dark).

  • Buy clothing in 3+ month sizes. They grow so fast in those early months and often items don't even get to be worn (just remember to match the size to the season).
